((( 1800's Cherokee Outlets received ))) the Cherokee Outlet , one of the federal government's more bizarre creations , was a particularly sore point . earlier in the century , when the Cherokee were resettled in Indian Territory , they were granted seven million acres bordering southern Kansas . at the same time they were also granted a westward corridor , providing a gateway to the distant buffalo ranges . comprising more than six million acres , roughly 150 miles in length , it was designated the Cherokee Outlet . the legal status of this strip was confounding from the start . in the short order , a public outcry arose over settlement of the Cherokee Outlet . the settlers were backed by the railroads and merchants princes , all of whom had a vested interest in the westward expansion . efforts were underway to bride the Cherokee into allowing settlement of the Outlet . (( A Game " Called " Fargo )) faro was one of the most popular games in western saloons and gaming dives . its name derived from the image of an Egyptian pharaoh on the back of the cards , and the game itself had originated a century earlier in France . o the game of choice for kings and royalty , it was now an addictive pastime for cowhands and gamblers throughout the west . cards were dealt from specially adapted box , and the players bet against the dealer . a player placed his money on the card of his choice , and two cards were then drawn faceup from the box . the first card drawn lost and the second card won . the player could " copper " his play by betting a card to lose instead of win . there were twenty - five turns , since the first and last cards in deck paid nothing . when the box was empty , the deler shuffled and the game began anew ( by ) joes_skies - for - joe olexson

((( Desiderius Erasmus ))) Desiderius Erasmus was a truly cosmopolitan scholar . he lived and worked in several European countries , where he made influential friends at royal courts and universities . scholars from many lands consulted him . his writings - widely read and appreciated - made him famous . for a time , everywhere he traveled he was welcomed with fanfare and acclaim by princes , prelates , and scholars alike . one moderm writer thus calls him the " renaissance equivalent of today's international celebrity . Diesderius Erasmus ( c.1469 - 1536 ) was at first admired as the most brilliant of European Scholars , then vilified as either a coward or a heretic . caught up in a tempest of religious debate , he dared to expose the faults and abusers that existed in Catholicism as well as among its would - be - reformers , today , he is recognized as a key figure in transformation of Europe's religious landscape . Erasmus lived through a period of momentous religious turmoil , and his Greek New Testament was considered an invaluable aid by the Protestant Reformers . Erasmus himself was considered by some to be a reformer , until , that is , the Reformation began in fearsome earnest . then he refused t take sides in the great theological debates that followed . In 1516 , Erasmus released the New Testament printed in Greek . it contained the Greek text in one column and his Latin translation in the other , as well as extensive annotations . in the preface to his New Testament , Erasmus wrote : " I vehemently dissent from those who would not have private ( common ) persons read the Holy Scriptures nor have them ( The Scriptures ) translated into the vulgar ( common ) tongues . His books were Burned by his critics in some parts of Europe and for many years they were included in the index of banned literature by people of Rome . In his writing Erasmus satirically exposed clergy abuses , their pompous lifestyle , and the ambition of Popes who applauded wars . he differed with corrupt clergymen who used church customs - such as confession of sins , the worship of the saints , fasting , and pilgrimages - to exploit believers . he also disagreed with such church practices as the sales of indulgences and enforced celibacy .
